These are live results from the database that receives nightly observational data from the LaserSETI observatories.

Signal Candidates by Level

Over the lifetime of the project, these are the signal counts detected for each type. Even though a single instrument is composed of two cameras looking at the same field of view, the cameras operate independently since it's possible an event could be seen by one or both cameras at the two different locations. Each camera identifies sources and whittles them down the candidates based on criteria designed to identify a laser transmission.

• Level 1 candidates, or C1s, are simply pixels measurably brighter than the noise level
• C2 connects C1s that are vertically aligned, where each row represents about a millsecond of signal transmission
• C3s are C2s that moved no faster than stars horizontally (which is at most 15 degrees per hour or 360 degrees per day)
• C4s are pairs of C3s whose spacing matches the transmission grating dispersion and are of comparable size, shape, and brightness

A true C5 is two instruments seeing the same C4 but from different observatories. The instruments are paired with the same fields of view as follows: (IFA1PC, RFO2PC) and (IFA2PC, RFO1PC).

Candidate Details

Candidates must be seen by multiple cameras within the allowable time limit of the CCD readout technique (TDI). To date, all have been single instrument false positives, believed to be caused by a bug in the camera.
